The Beatles fans are just learning a legendary guitarist once shared the stage with Paul McCartney, and they can’t believe who he is. A clip from a 1999 performance at The Cavern Club was posted online, leaving viewers astounded when they recognised the musician accompanying the Beatles legend.

Paul McCartney sang the hit ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ at the club, with the backing track played by some familiar faces. As it turns out, those familiar faces are two of the most respected musicians in the industry. Ian Paice of Deep Purple featured in the performance, adding another layer to the song’s musical history. However, the guitarist sharing the stage with McCartney and Paice is also someone that music enthusiasts might recognise, as X users were thrilled to learn.

Fans were over the moon as many who had “never seen this before” realised it was David Gilmour performing alongside McCartney.

The Pink Floyd guitarist turned solo artist has been friends with the ex-Beatle for years, even contributing to Wings’ final album, Back to the Egg.

Fans were delighted by the performance, with one writing: “Supergroup!” Another chimed in: “This concert is a hidden gem. It’s been on my playlist for quite a while now.”

A third commented: “I’ve never heard this before. While listening, I imagined a Pink Floyd-style, ten-minute psychedelic version of the song.”

Some fans were over the moon with the surprise collaboration and quick to suggest that the set featured some of the most exceptional musicians of all time.

One user had high praise for the show, writing: “Arguably one of best guitarist, bass player and drummer to hit a stage in our lifetimes.”

Gilmour was seemingly thrilled with how well they performed. He said afterwards: “I’ve been in The Who, I’ve been in The Beatles, and I’ve been in Pink Floyd. Top that, motherf***er.”

Gilmour referred to the Cavern Club concert as a career highlight.

He said: “Managing to persuade him to sing I Saw Her Standing There at the Cavern, with me doing the John Lennon parts, was absolutely fantastic.”

McCartney was full of praise for Gilmour too, lauding his versatility and mastery of music. He said: “He can play everything: bass, guitar, piano, drums… And on all these instruments, he’s at a very good level.

“We cannot, therefore, mystify him, he knows exactly what he wants. We owe him certain productions which were not of the greatest interest. But he definitely deserves the success and respect he enjoys.”
